Basically it all depends what country you're from and fortunately being from the UK you'll be over to change yours over without retaking the test. If you had a license from the US, you'd have to take the test.

A good place to start reading is the Japan Automobile Federation: http://www.jaf.or.jp/e/switch.htm
The article listed is on switching over a license from overseas.

I just went to Mt. Takao yesterday and it was fantastic. 47 minutes from Shinjuku on the Keio line. Be sure to catch the Semi-Special Express to Takaosanguchi. Then a 5 minute walk to the base. Going at a pretty fast clip, it took me an hour to get all the way to the summit. Some very steep sections.

I started up route 6 towards Biwa Waterfalls but had to switch to the cross-over towards the top of the cablecar due to heavy ice. Climbers coming down said I would have needed crampons. Anyway, it was a great but steep route that I ended up on. From the top of the cablecar on up, it's all paved but there are many sets of steps. (Often 108 for good luck.)

Great views of Mt Fuji from the top.

For the return on a weekday, be sure to catch the Semi-Special Express back too. Last one leaves at 4:27pm. After that, you have to take a local train or change at Takao station.

#1 most popular option for a daytrip from Tokyo is Mt. Takao (also known as Takaosan).
Take the JR train from Shinjuku to Takaosanguchi on the Keio Line, about 50 minutes. Hike or cablecar to the top.

Hi, We've found there is quite a range for the international schools, from over ¥280,000 per month on the high end down to ¥87,000 per month on the low end. Another option is to try getting your child into local Japanese school but maybe it depends on how adventurous you are in learning Japanese!
